Why the world isn't ready for Linux

Just talk

I'm a firm believer, that in order to own a PC, you should have to take lessons, and a test, to get a licence, there seem to be plenty of people willing to do this to drive to work, if you don't, then your PC experience, should be limited, as it would do if your driving a car, to a 50cc Moped of an experience. And i think i'm not the only one, as this is what the "Cloud computing" experience is serving up..

The State of UK Terrestrial Web TV

So what i'd like to do here, is round up the offerings of the main 5 TV channels, what i'm looking for, is the following, how do they work on the following platforms. WindowsXP, Ubuntu 8.10 and Mac OSX Tiger. I'm using XP and not vista, because i believe there are more XP installs out there. i'll use firefox as the browser of choice to keep the browser the same across all browsers, however will also give the default browser for each OS a go as well, just to see how different the experience is.

Desktop Distros

As a long time user of Linux, and reader of Linux Magazines, Websites and Blogs, many see the current Linux situation as being a dawn of a new horizon. Essentially the release of the EEE PC, the timely release of Vista and Ubuntu have all kick started the “Linux Revolution” for the Linux desktop.

Missed Opportunities.

Linux

I think we can all agree, that Linux is taking a foothold, and gaining a certain degree of traction among desktop users, the gripes of the past, are being chipped away, and the product is becoming slowly more solid. Now its time to market the product, in a cheap and easy way, by telling us what hardware already works....

Do we really want or need the crowds of Windows users moving over to Linux?

Just talk

I'm sort of at a bit of a loss, as to why we need to emulate the Windows environment. for those of us who have managed to move our daily lives over to Linux, probably via numerous distros, i think i'm safe in saying, we are happy where we are at.

Software Politics

  • It's 2015 And Congress Is Now, Finally, Allowed To Use Open Source Technologies
First, the good news: members of the House of Representatives in the US Congress are now allowed to use open source technology in their offices, rather than the very limited list of proprietary offerings they were given in the past. Second, the bad news: how the hell is it 2015 and this is only becoming an option now? I guess we can't change the past, and so let's celebrate the House of Reps finally getting to this point -- which just happens to coincide with the upcoming launch of the House Open Source Caucus (led by Reps. Blake Farenthold and Jared Polis).
  • The House opens up to open source
Traditionally, members of the House of Representatives have been presented with a limited plate of options when choosing technology to run their offices and manage their web presences. Members that wanted to take advantage of open source solutions — which are restriction-free, reusable and frequently more cost-effective — faced significant uncertainty and were pushed towards a small selection of proprietary options.
  • Extremadura schoolboard’s software deal protested
Advocates of free software are protesting a tender by the school board of the Spanish region of Extremadura requesting proprietary software licences. The advocacy group, Extremadura Focus Initiative, is supported by the new, incoming government of the region and by several of Extremadura’s school teachers.
