It seems the negotiations between Intel and Microsoft to get MS on board initially had Intel taking a fairly strong anti-DRM stance. Every time Intel said no, Microsoft pulled out a proverbial Athlon 64, laid it on the table, and said something like 'they are on board'. Powerful argument that.
So, whether this story is true or not, it comes from a source who definitely was not at the table. It also may be a complete fabrication by the source, but it sounds like rumours I've heard of before, and it does line up with the tactics I have seen the parties use in the past.
