id software released the long awaited Quake4 Tuesday and promised Linux binaries within the week. They had them posted in 2 days! Such commitment to Linux users should be rewarded. Perhaps consider purchasing this action packed exciting 1st person shooter. It features the main character in an army unit aiding the destruction of the invading Stroug forces. He is helped along by many other "army men" and makes for a less desolate and lonely mission.
Phoronix has posted a lot of screenshots to tempt even the most passive of souls. Looks like they got to about where I have.
After a few little niggles, I now have the game stable and am enjoying blowing away mean ole strougs. One of the first difficulties arose from some of the pak4 files not being executable. If you get a "can't find default.cfg file" error, chmod those game paks that the installer installs. And make sure you're using the linux binary game paks. The installer overwrites or provides them in place of the ones on the cd. If you're like me, you ran the installer first, then copied the *.pak4 files and faar'd it up! Crash city. Then it dawned on me to rerun the linux installer.
I have an amd 2800 on an kt400 mobo with 512mb pc3200 ram and an nvidia 6800oc graphics card. I had to turn most of the graphic effects down to the lowest or off to get smooth game play. What a bummer.
But even at some of the lowest effects settings, this is still one beautifully rendered game. Details are amazing and the action is realistic. The sound is no less impressive and with only one of the old 4+1 speaker setups, it sounds like I'm right in the thick of the fighting. One of the cutest things is even though there are the traditional health packs laying around, there are also medics in the squads that will fix ya up and bring your health back up to 100. There are also squad members that will give you fresh armor as well (bring it back up to 100). Too cute.
I suspect there might be a few critics on the horizon waiting to impale this game with insults. It is a shoot-em-up first and foremost, so don't be surprised when much of the action is blowing meanies away! I'm not sure I like it any better than Doom3, but I do like it better than the 200X Unreals.
So anyway, those Screenshots.
