The computer, which soon became my arch-nemisis, was a two year old Dell Pentium 4. This was by any means a solid system which should have been working fine but definitely was not.
The owners, incidentally my parents, had bought the computer, without consulting me. A year later the system was not doing so well. By this time the system was bogged down with spyware, probably a few viruses, lots of old programs, and anything else which could be detrimental to a computer's performance.
My original thought was to format the system and reinstall Windows XP, my parents operating system of choice. After a search for their Windows disk came up empty, I had the excuse I wanted to do something which I had been plotting since the problems with the computer began - moving my parent's computer to Linux.
