progress feedback when downloading in pirut again
* cli.py, yum/__init__.py: fix whatprovides based on a patch from Tim
Lauridsen
* yum/rpmsack.py: makePackageObject -> _makePackageObject
* yum/__init__.py: Fixed the disk space check; it was failing because
po.size can be a string. Make the disk space check more readable by
using the statvfs attributes.
* yum/__init__.py: Prevent a KeyError that was occur during the disk space
check because errors wasn't always initialised correctly. Added
adderror() to avoid initialisation problems like this and minimise
clutter.
* yum/: __init__.py, packages.py: partial check in just to get it off my
laptop: 1. do check for space in cache dir for downloading packages 2.
start changing around the way packages are checked
* yum/: __init__.py, packages.py: get rid of silly code in verifyPkg()
* yum/rpmsack.py: as I read through the changes: - clean up one docstring
- make some of the list constructions using _search look the same
* yum/rpmsack.py: make getNameArchPkgList() and getNamePkgList()
consistent - if our pkglist is length zero then they would have traced
back.
* yum/: __init__.py, misc.py, packages.py:
- move refineSearchPattern into misc from YumBase
- clean up some pychecker errors
* yum/rpmsack.py: Big cleanup of RPMDBPackageSack. Indexes are no longer
built (buildIndexes). This significantly reducing Yum's initialisation
time and reduces memory footprint. Despite the lack of indexes almost
all operations are faster.
* cli.py, output.py, yum/__init__.py, yum/misc.py, yum/packages.py:
- fix up findDeps interface
- it now takes a list of package objects
- clean up a deprecation in deplistoutput
- remove RpmBase._prcoTuple2Printable() since it was no longer needed
and only introduced in this devel series.
* cli.py: more obvious error message for group not existing
* cli.py: remove a bunch of unused imports
* cli.py: use TYPE_INTERACTIVE instead of the deprecated TYPE_INTERFACE
* rpmUtils/miscutils.py: make epoch output quasi-consistent for
comparisons
* yum/depsolve.py: add some debug output to depsolving
- require rpm >= 4.4

*) Introduce limits to prevent malicious keys being able to
cause a denial of service. (CVE-2006-2940)
*) Fix ASN.1 parsing of certain invalid structures that can result
in a denial of service. (CVE-2006-2937)
*) Fix buffer overflow in SSL_get_shared_ciphers() function.
(CVE-2006-3738)
*) Fix SSL client code which could crash if connecting to a
malicious SSLv2 server. (CVE-2006-4343)
*) Since 0.9.8b, ciphersuite strings naming explicit ciphersuites
match only those. Before that, "AES256-SHA" would be interpreted
as a pattern and match "AES128-SHA" too (since AES128-SHA got
the same strength classification in 0.9.7h) as we currently only
have a single AES bit in the ciphersuite description bitmap.
That change, however, also applied to ciphersuite strings such as
"RC4-MD5" that intentionally matched multiple ciphersuites --
namely, SSL 2.0 ciphersuites in addition to the more common ones
from SSL 3.0/TLS 1.0.
So we change the selection algorithm again: Naming an explicit
ciphersuite selects this one ciphersuite, and any other similar
ciphersuite (same bitmap) from *other* protocol versions.
Thus, "RC4-MD5" again will properly select both the SSL 2.0
ciphersuite and the SSL 3.0/TLS 1.0 ciphersuite.
Since SSL 2.0 does not have any ciphersuites for which the
128/256 bit distinction would be relevant, this works for now.
The proper fix will be to use different bits for AES128 and
AES256, which would have avoided the problems from the beginning;
however, bits are scarce, so we can only do this in a new release
(not just a patchlevel) when we can change the SSL_CIPHER
definition to split the single 'unsigned long mask' bitmap into
multiple values to extend the available space.

files and give you MD5 checksums of the files inside, without
writing the unpacked files to disk.
* Large files (more than 2 gigabytes) are now correctly searched
for cabinet files.
* A security vulnerability has been fixed. Files compressed with
the Quantum method, using a window size less than 32768 bytes,
could cause cabextract to write beyond the end of the window
and cause a segmentation fault. This fix also permits
cabextract to unpack this type of cabinet file (of which only
one has been found in the wild) correctly.
* The unnecessary GNU source mempcpy.c, which caused compilation
failures on several systems, was removed.
* An off-by-one error introduced in 1.1's UTF-8 decoder was
fixed. Files with UTF-8 filenames can now be extracted. The
UTF-8 decoder was also upgraded to support the latest

output of PostScript programs ("-sstdout=%stderr") in newer
GhostScript versions. More reliable then using /dev/fd/3 (not always
available difficult to check presence) or '|cat >3' (not seekable
and some GhostScript output devices require seekability of the
output file),

containing "PJL" and if the prefix is not changed by a
"*FoomaticJCLPrefix:" in the PPD file. If there is a "*JCLBegin:"
without "PJL" and no "*FoomaticJCLPrefix:" the JCL commands do not
get any prefix. Fixed also bug of $jobuser and $jobhost not being
chomped.
- foomatic-rip.in: Added substitution of special XML entities by job
data, as date, time, job ID, user name, ... (in function
"unhtmlify()"). This was suggested by George Liu from Ricoh (george
dot liu at ussj dot ricoh dot com), to support jobs with submission
of login/password to the printer.

regexp for reading the config file (Thanks to Hans-Dieter Kosch,
hdkosch at t-online dot de, for this fix).

profile for security reasons (Bug #192605)

++++ avahi:

- update to version 0.6.14
- Add new daemon "avahi-autoipd" which is an implementation of
IPv4LL as defined in RFC3927, a technology for assigning link-local IP
addresses without DHCP server. The same functionality has been available on
Windows under the name APIPA. While it is not the first implemenatation of
this technology for Free operating systems it is clearly the most powerful
and hopefully even the most secure. (Because it chroot()s and drops
priviliges and suchlike)

++++ cairomm:

- Initial SuSE package version 1.2.2

++++ coreutils:

- Update to coreutils 6.2.
** Changes in behavior
mkdir -p and install -d (or -D) now use a method that forks a child
process if the working directory is unreadable and a later argument
uses a relative file name. This avoids some race conditions, but it
means you may need to kill two processes to stop these programs.
rm now rejects attempts to remove the root directory, e.g., `rm -fr /'
now fails without removing anything. Likewise for any file name with
a final `./' or `../' component.
tail now ignores the -f option if POSIXLY_CORRECT is set, no file
operand is given, and standard input is any FIFO; formerly it did
this only for pipes.
** Infrastructure changes
Coreutils now uses gnulib via the gnulib-tool script.
If you check the source out from CVS, then follow the instructions
in README-cvs. Although this represents a large change to the
infrastructure, it should cause no change in how the tools work.
** Bug fixes
cp --backup no longer fails when the last component of a source file
name is "." or "..".
"ls --color" would highlight other-writable and sticky directories
no differently than regular directories on a file system with
dirent.d_type support.
"mv -T --verbose --backup=t A B" now prints the " (backup: B.~1~)"
suffix when A and B are directories as well as when they are not.
mv and "cp -r" no longer fail when invoked with two arguments
where the first one names a directory and the second name ends in
a slash and doesn't exist. E.g., "mv dir B/", for nonexistent B,
now succeeds, once more. This bug was introduced in coreutils-5.3.0.

(#202829)

++++ openssl:

- update to 0.9.8c
Changes between 0.9.8b and 0.9.8c [05 Sep 2006]
*) Avoid PKCS #1 v1.5 signature attack discovered by Daniel Bleichenbacher
(CVE-2006-4339) [Ben Laurie and Google Security Team]
*) Add AES IGE and biIGE modes. [Ben Laurie]
*) Change the Unix randomness entropy gathering to use poll() when
possible instead of select(), since the latter has some
undesirable limitations. [Darryl Miles via Richard Levitte and Bodo Moeller]
*) Disable "ECCdraft" ciphersuites more thoroughly. Now special
treatment in ssl/ssl_ciph.s makes sure that these ciphersuites
cannot be implicitly activated as part of, e.g., the "AES" alias.
However, please upgrade to OpenSSL 0.9.9[-dev] for
non-experimental use of the ECC ciphersuites to get TLS extension
support, which is required for curve and point format negotiation
to avoid potential handshake problems. [Bodo Moeller]
*) Disable rogue ciphersuites:
- SSLv2 0x08 0x00 0x80 ("RC4-64-MD5")
- SSLv3/TLSv1 0x00 0x61 ("EXP1024-RC2-CBC-MD5")
- SSLv3/TLSv1 0x00 0x60 ("EXP1024-RC4-MD5")
The latter two were purportedly from
draft-ietf-tls-56-bit-ciphersuites-0[01].txt, but do not really
appear there.
Also deactive the remaining ciphersuites from
draft-ietf-tls-56-bit-ciphersuites-01.txt. These are just as
unofficial, and the ID has long expired. [Bodo Moeller]
*) Fix RSA blinding Heisenbug (problems sometimes occured on
dual-core machines) and other potential thread-safety issues.
[Bodo Moeller]
*) Add the symmetric cipher Camellia (128-bit, 192-bit, 256-bit key
versions), which is now available for royalty-free use
(see http://info.isl.ntt.co.jp/crypt/eng/info/chiteki.html).
Also, add Camellia TLS ciphersuites from RFC 4132.
To minimize changes between patchlevels in the OpenSSL 0.9.8
series, Camellia remains excluded from compilation unless OpenSSL
is configured with 'enable-camellia'. [NTT]
*) Disable the padding bug check when compression is in use. The padding
bug check assumes the first packet is of even length, this is not
necessarily true if compresssion is enabled and can result in false
positives causing handshake failure. The actual bug test is ancient
code so it is hoped that implementations will either have fixed it by
now or any which still have the bug do not support compression.
[Steve Henson]
Changes between 0.9.8a and 0.9.8b [04 May 2006]
*) When applying a cipher rule check to see if string match is an explicit
cipher suite and only match that one cipher suite if it is. [Steve Henson]
*) Link in manifests for VC++ if needed. [Austin Ziegler ]
*) Update support for ECC-based TLS ciphersuites according to
draft-ietf-tls-ecc-12.txt with proposed changes (but without
TLS extensions, which are supported starting with the 0.9.9
branch, not in the OpenSSL 0.9.8 branch). [Douglas Stebila]
*) New functions EVP_CIPHER_CTX_new() and EVP_CIPHER_CTX_free() to support
opaque EVP_CIPHER_CTX handling. [Steve Henson]
*) Fixes and enhancements to zlib compression code. We now only use
"zlib1.dll" and use the default __cdecl calling convention on Win32
to conform with the standards mentioned here:
http://www.zlib.net/DLL_FAQ.txt
Static zlib linking now works on Windows and the new --with-zlib-include
--with-zlib-lib options to Configure can be used to supply the location
of the headers and library. Gracefully handle case where zlib library
can't be loaded. [Steve Henson]
*) Several fixes and enhancements to the OID generation code. The old code
sometimes allowed invalid OIDs (1.X for X >= 40 for example), couldn't
handle numbers larger than ULONG_MAX, truncated printing and had a
non standard OBJ_obj2txt() behaviour. [Steve Henson]
*) Add support for building of engines under engine/ as shared libraries
under VC++ build system. [Steve Henson]
*) Corrected the numerous bugs in the Win32 path splitter in DSO.
Hopefully, we will not see any false combination of paths any more.
[Richard Levitte]
- enable Camellia cipher. There is a royalty free license to the
patents, see http://info.isl.ntt.co.jp/crypt/eng/info/chiteki.html.
NOTE: the license forbids patches to the cipher.
- build with zlib-dynamic and add zlib-devel to BuildRequires.
Allows compression of data in TLS, although few application would
actually use it since there is no standard for negotiating the
compression method. The only one I know if is stunnel.

Open source history, present day, and licensing

Looking at open source softwares particularly, this is a fact that is probably useful to you if you are thinking about business models, many people don't care about it anymore. We talk about FOSS, Free and Open Source Software, but if we really are strict there's a difference between free software and open source software. On the left, I have free software which most typically is GPL software. Software where the license insures freedom. It gives freedoms to you as a user, but it also requires that the freedoms are maintained. On the right-hand side, you have open source software which is open for all, but it also allows you to close it. So here we come back to the famous clause of the GPL license, the reciprocity requirement which says, "If I am open, you need to be open." So software that comes under the GPL license carries with it something that other people call a virus. I call it a blessing because I think it's great if all software becomes open. Read more

Mozilla Wants to Save the Open Web, but is it Too Late?

Again, I think this is absolutely correct. But what it fails to recognise is that one of the key ways of making the Web medium "less free and open" is the use of legally-protected DRM. DRM is the very antithesis of openness and of sharing. And yet, sadly, as I reported back in May, Mozilla has decided to back adding DRM to the Web, starting first with video (but it won't end there...) This means Mozilla's Firefox is itself is a vector of attack against openness and sharing, and undermines its own lofty goals in the Open Web Fellows programme. Read more
