Ubuntu Summit: Inside the Googleplex
I'm at the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Mountain View, California in the heart of Silicon Valley -- at the Googleplex. This biannual event is held within a couple of weeks of every Ubuntu release, to plan the features, processes and the development cycle for the next release -- in this case "Feisty" which will become Ubuntu 7.04 when it releases in April next year.
These events are an opportunity for the core developers and community people to get together and meet face to face -- most of the contributors are scattered around the world from North and South America, Europe, India and the Far East, through to Australia and New Zealand. (South) Africa is represented by Richard Weideman, Canonical's Education Manager, and myself.
The main activity at the Developer Summit is discussion and drafting of specifications for the features for Feisty. A list of specifications have been registered in Launchpad's Blueprint system for discussion at this event.

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future TechThe metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |
