has anyone done this and is it possible? Ubuntu Dapper on Thinkpad r60 celeron
I decided yesterday that I am not going with these linux laptop companies various computers but a ThinkPad r60 celeron 1GB ram and intelr wireless card and installing ubuntu myself.
has anyone done this?
I know how to spell Linux and Ubuntu but am not a command line junky. I am a neophyte with 8 years of interest in linux. I am making the plunge. None of the linux companies have impressed me for many negative reasons. so has anyone done this?
Is anyone that KNOWS Linux and Ubuntu DapperDrake willing to help me get this going? I am a mac OS X dude and hate windows with a passion. I do not want to buy this windows based machine only to not get linux ubuntu on it and then have to give it away because i refuse to run windows ever again in my life!
thank you!
any help and counsel will be greatly appreciated.

did it!
OK! I did it today - i bought the new r60 basic unit Thinkpad celeron 1.6 ghz with cdrw-dvd, intel pro wireless card and 1 BG of ram. I am planning on installing Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper on it. I also bought the Official Ubuntu book I have been reading in my spare time and I should be getting in tomorrow the O'reilly book I beleie Running Linux that should give me a good start to linux.
Just thought I'd let you know the progress. Now to install it. Single boot all Ubuntu - I will have to setup winxp home to load the live cd and install from that and write over the whole drive.
In case you do not know I refuse to use and hate windows with a passion. It is absolutely nauseating to even see or hear windows running. I love my OS X and my Powerbook and my Macbook Pro! Sweetest scene ever. 5 years of macs and not 1 crash! on 3-4 machines too.
Why Linux? I am stupid and crazy - Macs are great I will always use them but linux fascinated me and also I like free OS free software and and open source attitude. Mac OS X is so sweet I really have no need to go to linux. I also depend on 1 web app for my business that runs OS X. Not on linux.
I also used to do high end music production and again - Macs!!!
well, that's the news from lake Waubegon, where all the.....
Huh?
You should be able to just boot from the Ubuntu cd, without ever installing Windows.

Ubuntu is lame as a duck- not the metaphorical lame duck, but more like a real duck that hurt its leg, maybe by stepping on a land mine.
thanks
ok Thanks - I could not access the site this AM before work. I was interested in seeing if there was any response. I am getting closer to my deadline re: my decisiong to buy it or not. something tells me to just go for it.
Go for it!
You won't regret it. I've spent the past month or so making Slackware do what I want on my laptop... and I've loved every minute of it.
Yeah...
Ubuntu is somewhat anti-command-line. If you'd asked Slackware... well, that's another thing entirely.
You shouldn't have much problem at all getting Ubuntu to work.
Thanks --- the first 2 I
Thanks --- the first 2 I knew of the last one i didn't.
I am so hesitant to make this plunge after all of the problems I see people having.....argh!!! That is a lot of $$$ to blow on a windows computer....
re: ubuntu on thinkpad r60
Welp, I haven't personally, but I thought I'd seen posts about it and google turned up quite a few links. This one in particular:
Installing_Ubuntu_6.06_on_a_ThinkPad_R60
In fact there were several useful looking links:
Linux Thinkpad r60
Or
Ubuntu Thinkpad r60
You should be able to do it without having to wade too deep into the commandline.
hth.
