Linux Hardware Support
Every few weeks an article comes up on Slashdot or Digg in which someone describes their experience switching from Microsoft Windows to some Linux distribution. In these articles, the writers have consistently complained about Linux’s support for their hardware. The common complaint is that a particular piece of hardware was not configured and working by default after the install. They say that everything worked “Out of the box” on their Windows machine. They complain about having to search the Internet for help on making their device work in Linux.
Here’s the problem with that argument: Most hardware does not work “Out of the box” in Windows. Last time I installed Windows I had to spend time searching the Internet for drivers for my Ethernet adapter, video card, and sound card.
Here’s an experiment to try next time you build a new computer: Build a computer from Linux compatible hardware. Its easy enough.
