Attorney puts missing woman's character on trial
The defense attorney representing murder suspect Hans Reiser painted missing mother Nina Reiser as a woman who had been engaging in deviant sexual behavior and whose family has ties to Russian secret police and intelligence agencies.
That depiction was made during the preliminary hearing for Oakland's Hans Reiser, 43, on charges that he murdered his estranged wife. In the morning, the missing woman's best friend, Ellen Doren, and the couple's 7-year-old son testified in the courtroom of Judge Julie Conger in Alameda Superior Court in Oakland.
During cross-examination of Nina Reiser's best friend, Ellen Doren, defense attorney William Du Bois said the missing woman was not the person her friend believed she was.
Du Bois contended that Nina Reiser's father, a doctor, works in a Russian resort with possible links to the KGB, known since the fall of the Soviet Union 15 years ago as the FSB.
The 7-year-old son of an Oakland man charged with murdering his wife testified in court today that he hadn't heard his parents arguing the day police believe that she was killed.
The boy, whom The Chronicle is not naming because of his age, also said that he saw his mother, Nina Reiser, 31, go out the front door of his father's home that day.
The testimony appears to contradict information outlined in an Oakland police statement released in October that outlined the grounds for the arrest of the boy's father, Hans Reiser, 42, in the presumed killing of his estranged wife.
