Dell's love affair with Linux is a clandestine affair these days, conducted in secret, away from disapproving eyes. But now the pair have been spotted in China.
When Michael Dell first saw the web-footed beauty, he fell head over heels. Six years ago Dell pledged a series of strategic investments in Linux companies, including Eazel and Red Hat. Dell is evolving away from Intel inside ?
Dell's business was dependent entirely on Intel inside motherboards, eliminating incoming quality control at all IT departments, where their sales department is really the IT service organizations including IBM service. They failed every time selling thru computer stores, where they never understood payola.
Then they tried Linux with no sales and AMD CPU in Japan with a limited run.
The real surprise will be Microsoft Vista, which does not support XP applications. Service people will continue to sell Dell with XP, making Wall street thinking Dell will not be helped by Vista sales. Most IT dept., however, will be using Vista for realtime applications, especially accounting software for instant profit and loss statements prepared for the CEOs.
So, Dell will be lucky, despite all the Wall Street analysts' understandings.
