What is this ss program thingy?

Those of you who peek and poke around your linux file system may have come across a program called "ss". No it is not a secret code to the gestapo nor is it the initials of my name. It is part of the iproute2 package and it is a very useful program. It usually resides in /sbin or /usr/sbin.

The "ss" program is an acronym for "sockstat" or socket statistics. Don't we geeks love our acronyms Smiling. This program was written by Alexey Kuznetsov. But what does it do?
