Researchers have created the world’s thinnest material which they hope could mark a breakthrough in the development of super-fast computer chips. The sheet, which is just a single atom thick, has been used to make the world’s smallest transistor.
This innovation will allow ultra-small electronics to take over when the current silicon-based technology reaches its limitations, according to Professor Andre Geim and Dr Kostya Novoselov from the University of Manchester.
In recent decades, manufacturers have crammed more and more components onto microchips, with the number of transistors doubling every two years.
But the ability to fit in ever more components is now decreasing.
