Ubuntu 20.10 (Groovy Gorilla) Beta Is Now Available for Download

Ubuntu

Development on Ubuntu 20.10 kicked off earlier this year, shortly after the launch of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa), but since it’s not a long-term supported (LTS) series, there aren’t any major new features and enhancements to be expected in the upcoming release.

The biggest things you already know about them. Ubuntu 20.10 will be shipping with the latest and greatest Linux 5.8 kernel series, which, of course, brings better hardware support, as well as the latest and greatest GNOME 3.38 desktop environment, which I took for a first look this week.

Ubuntu 20.10 Beta Released For Testing

  • Ubuntu 20.10 Beta Released For Testing

Ubuntu 20.10 is due for its official release on 22 October while the beta serves as the prime opportunity for testing it to avoid any last minute snafus. Ubuntu 20.10 is riding high atop the stable Linux 5.8 kernel, migrated to the GCC 10 compiler this cycle, Active Directory support was added to the installer, continued work on the opt-in ZFS root file-system support, restricting access to dmesg, and on the desktop side is rounded out by the recently released GNOME 3.38 that has many improvements in its own right.

Today is Friday, meaning later this afternoon, we will officially be starting the weekend! Woo-hoo! Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, many of us will be spending our weekend downtime indoors once again. Sigh. The weekend is far less exciting when you've been self-quarantining for months due to a pandemic.

Thankfully, we can all still have plenty of fun while indoors thanks to the internet. Not only can we stream video and music, but we can play online video games too. If you are a computer nerd, however, I have a much better suggestion -- install the new Ubuntu Beta! That's right, Linux fans, Ubuntu 20.10 "Groovy Gorilla" Beta is now available for download. This doesn't just include the "vanilla" GNOME version either, but other variants like Kubuntu and Xubuntu as well.

Ubuntu 20.10 New Features Review and How to Upgrade

  • Ubuntu 20.10 New Features Review and How to Upgrade

The wait is finally over (almost) for all you Ubuntu fans out there. The latest version of Ubuntu, 20.10 codenamed “Groovy Gorilla,” is currently available in the beta version. I have tested out the distro myself, and it is stable enough to take out for a spin.

However, as the case with any beta releases, I won’t recommend it to regular users who plan to use it on their main PC for serious work. For that, you need to be patient and hold your breath for a little longer. The final release is scheduled for 22nd Oct 2020.

Ubuntu Groovy Gorilla Beta Available

  • Ubuntu Groovy Gorilla Beta Available

Canonical has released the first beta version of the upcoming 20.10 (Non-LTS) release, named Groovy Gorilla. The support window for Short Term Releases (STR) is only 9 months. After that 9 months expires, users of STR releases will receive no updates. So keep that in mind, when installing these non Long Term Release versions of Ubuntu.

That being said, if you want the latest-greatest version of Ubuntu, the STR releases are a good choice.

The features and improvements to be found in Ubuntu 20.10 include the newest GNOME release (3.38). With GNOME 3.38 you’ll enjoy the ability to manually arrange icons in the Applications grid, folder support has been added to the grid, scale-aware application grid sizing, a new Restart option in the System menu, Wi-Fi sharing QR codes, a much-improved sound recorder and screenshot app, and new parental controls have been added to the Settings app. For more information on the GNOME 3.38 release, check out the official release notes.

  • How To Install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9 - idroot

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9. For those of you who didn’t know, MongoDB is a high-performance, highly scalable document-oriented NoSQL database. Unlike in SQL databases where data is stored in rows and columns inside tables, in MongoDB, data is structured in JSON-like format inside records which are referred to as documents. The open-source attribute of MongoDB as a database software makes it an ideal candidate for almost any database-related project. This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the MongoDB NoSQL database on AlmaLinux 9. You can follow the same instructions for CentOS and Rocky Linux.

Ghost is a very popular open-source content management system. Started as an alternative to WordPress and it went on to become an alternative to Substack by focusing on membership and newsletter. The creators of Ghost offer managed Pro hosting but it may not fit everyone's budget. Alternatively, you can self-host it on your own cloud servers. On Linux handbook, we already have a guide on deploying Ghost with Docker in a reverse proxy setup. Instead of Ngnix reverse proxy, you can also use another software called Traefik with Docker. It is a popular open-source cloud-native application proxy, API Gateway, Edge-router, and more. I use Traefik to secure my websites using an SSL certificate obtained from Let's Encrypt. Once deployed, Traefik can automatically manage your certificates and their renewals. In this tutorial, I'll share the necessary steps for deploying a Ghost blog with Docker and Traefik.
