Another Novell employee leaves

SUSE

This marks my 261st blog entry as a Novell employee. It shall also mark my last. An operose decision, I resigned as Chief Architect of our Linux Desktop endeavor, effective today.

In the house that Ximian built, we dreamt and saw to fruition the world's finest Linux desktop, Linux's first desktop commercial success. Seated at the table aside some of the industry's sharpest hackers, we challenged ourselves not with the goal of building another Linux desktop, but with the aim of engineering a more perfect desktop—Linux or otherwise. Unsatisfied with simply cheaper, we went for broke: better and faster, too. SLED's éclat is ours.

Leaving is never easy. But here and now the timing is right and so, after three and a half years, here's to what's next.

Robert's Blog.

Why the heck does

Why the heck does tuxmachines announce every single Novell employee departure? Especially with 'Another Novell employee leaves'? His decision to leave (like 99.99% of all others in the company) is completely unrelated to any FUD. Believe it or not, people do change jobs for uncontroversial reasons. Novell is an incredibly large company.

apokryphos, You're an idiot.

apokryphos,

You're an idiot. It's not "just another Novell employee", because it's not a janitor that's leaving, it's the Chief Architect of Linux Desktop.

So it does matter. And yes, Novell will be the death for SuSE Linux in the long run.

No, the obvious point is

No, the obvious point is that it's not in any way related to the Microsoft-Novell deal, and that secondly, yes, he is another employee. How exactly do you think big companies work? You really think one person stays in the same position for decades?

You think Novell are on-the-whole losing engineers? You couldn't be more wrong. You just don't hear about all the new hirings.

You think SUSE Linux will 'die'? Have you completely ignored how successful SLED and SLES is becoming in the enterprise?

There have been many

There have been many departure at a fairly high level. Several of them (if not all) were in protest of the deal. That speaks volumes.

This is completely false.

This is completely false. This departure, like the MAJORITY of the others (honestly, please do your research), are because of very basic shifts in employment/jobs for people. They're only popularised because people want to jump on the troll-waggon after every change in Novell.

Hmmm...

You seem to be right, I'll admit.

  • How To Install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9 - idroot

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9. For those of you who didn’t know, MongoDB is a high-performance, highly scalable document-oriented NoSQL database. Unlike in SQL databases where data is stored in rows and columns inside tables, in MongoDB, data is structured in JSON-like format inside records which are referred to as documents. The open-source attribute of MongoDB as a database software makes it an ideal candidate for almost any database-related project. This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the MongoDB NoSQL database on AlmaLinux 9. You can follow the same instructions for CentOS and Rocky Linux.

  • Self-host a Ghost Blog With Traefik

Ghost is a very popular open-source content management system. Started as an alternative to WordPress and it went on to become an alternative to Substack by focusing on membership and newsletter. The creators of Ghost offer managed Pro hosting but it may not fit everyone's budget. Alternatively, you can self-host it on your own cloud servers. On Linux handbook, we already have a guide on deploying Ghost with Docker in a reverse proxy setup. Instead of Ngnix reverse proxy, you can also use another software called Traefik with Docker. It is a popular open-source cloud-native application proxy, API Gateway, Edge-router, and more. I use Traefik to secure my websites using an SSL certificate obtained from Let's Encrypt. Once deployed, Traefik can automatically manage your certificates and their renewals. In this tutorial, I'll share the necessary steps for deploying a Ghost blog with Docker and Traefik.
