Linux Game Review: Nexuiz
Nexuiz is a 3d first person shooter (FPS) done in the old Quake 1 style of gameplay where graphics weren't as important as was the raw fun of pure deathmatch play. That form of gameplay has been lost in many ways in the newer games of today with their greater concentration on graphics and less on gameplay. Nexuiz has recaptured that spirit of the original FPS games and worked to improve it to a level equal to or greater than today's best shooters. And in my opinion, they have, despite their goal to stay away from the current trend of "realistic" shooters which, as stated before, concentrate on graphics over gameplay.
Started in late 2001 by Lee Vermeulen as a Quake 1 mod, it was soon moved to the Open Source "DarkPlaces" Quake Engine and developed over a four year period completely over the internet until version 1.0 appeared in May of 2005. From there development has grown rapidly until reaching version 2.3 which was released just recently. The game is actively developed by an open source development company known as AlienTrap.
The game includes quite a few fairly modern enhancements and features that make it state of the art in several ways. This includes:
