What virtualization means in enterprise hardware ?
Most virtualization proposals are software interoptive(interop organization coined this word). It is software connectivity by emulation. which is obsoleted by dotnet packets, long long ago.
The new concept is to use virtual desktop of mainframe class servers to tie together cheap terminals to use virtual servers then get on the main server farm repository of data synchronization(Internet servers of database)
This only need browsers for 55-60 terminals to have VPN to one 4 cpu server. Then the 4 cpu server gets on the Internet.
It save money because terminals obsolete in 8 years, but laptops obsolete in 4 years. Terminals can use tiny Linux operating system(livecd) with a browser to do all the company business on the virtual desktop, which the administrator can lock down in no time flat(Google Ajax websites). Whereas, if each worker uses laptop or desktop, the administrators had to have a large organization travelling to the individual sites to fix bugs.
So, VPN via dotnet packets is the virtualization of choice for desktops; emulators(vmware, etc.) are obsoleted many years ago.
Footnote:
The original Novell netware was a server network(intranet) which has clients of wordperfect software application. Now it is coming back in full circle, netware is the server of virtual desktop of openoffice, drupal, with apache and mysql, etc.. Older PCs will be used as terminals.
