Production of low-cost laptop to start in September

OLPC

The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project will start mass production of its first laptop model, the OLPC XO, in September, says chief technology officer Mary Lou Jepson.

OLPC originally formed part of the Media Lab of the US-based Massachusets Institute of Technology, but is now an independent organisation.

The organisation's aim is to design a $100 laptop for educational use by children in developing nations.

"The project is going well. We are working closely with Intel, which has joined OLPC," says Jepson.

Jepson says it is not possible to say which countries will receive the laptops first, as they wish to make announcements on the matter themselves.

Individuals do not buy the laptops, but rather ministries of education, importing them at no duty, as OLPC is viewed as a humanitarian project.
