MPAA files suit against suspected pirates
The Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. Tuesday filed lawsuits in Waco, Texas, against four people accused of illegally downloading movies.
"Internet piracy is happening in cities all across America, from Waco, Texas to Rochester, New York," MPAA Worldwide Anti-Piracy Director John G. Malcolm said in a release announcing the action. "We won`t stand by while people steal valuable copyrighted material with no regard whatsoever for the law or for the rights of creative people to be paid for their efforts."
The suits send a message: "You can click but you can`t hide," he added.
The civil suits seek damages and injunctive relief against Miguel Mendez, Michael Mouzone, Robert Thomas and Michelle Vedder, the MPAA said.
Statutory damages could run as high as $30,000 for each film illegally copied or distributed over the Internet or up to $150,000 if the infringement is proven willful.
