Upgrading an operating system is easy
Yesterday I decided to take the ultimate test of my badly mangled edgy Linux installation. Instead of the tried and true reformat and reload method I wanted to try the distribution upgrade that the automatic update kept on nagging me about. So jumping off of the deep end to see if I would sink or swim I just went ahead and gave permission to the upgrade tool to bump me up to feeling feisty.
The first thing it did was download the distribution update tool and start that going. This started going through my system and working out what needed to be done. It informed me that a couple of third party repositories I had added would be disabled and I could re-enable them later on. Then it told me that it was going to upgrade over 1300 packages and it would take a while and to be safe and not lose data I should close down any open programs.
