Computer Forensics: Linux Style!
Which OS do you think is best for computer forensics? Obviously, being as we are Linux users, we'd likely recommend admins consider using a Linux-based approach for such a task. But which applications are honestly available on this platform? Not only that, are any of them open source?
In Canada, It Seems That They Use Open Source Tools to Foil Crooks and Creeps. It's right there in black and white, a Canadian computer forensics company using both closed and open source tools to get the evidence from a target hard drive. But one thing I found interesting about the security expert described in the article was the apparent use by the industry of a Windows application called EnCase.
Consider this for a minute. Windows is a bounty of exploits just waiting to happen. It's not secure, and yet we are to believe that people are putting their lives in the hands of a Windows application! If I was a defendant in that trial, I would insist on having Totally Connected Security as the company testing my drives, because I cannot really be sure that the code running EnCase has been reviewed by a jury of my own geeky peers.
