Linux wins Nigerian school desktops back from Microsoft
Microsoft may not have beaten French Linux vendor Mandriva in a large deal to supply Nigerian elementary schools with laptop computers and software after all.
Mandriva had closed a deal in mid-August to provide a customised Linux operating system and support for 17,000 Intel Classmate PCs intended for Nigerian schools, but found out last week that the company deploying the computers for the government, Technology Support Center (TSC), planned to wipe the computers' disks and install Windows XP instead.
Now, however, a government agency funding 11,000 of the PCs has overruled the supplier. Nigeria's Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) wants to keep Mandriva Linux on the Classmate PCs, said an official who identified himself as the programme manager for USPF's Classmate PCs project.
"We are sticking with that platform," said the official, who would not give his name.

if there was any doubt of m$ involvement ...
it should be dispelled now. Why should a customer have o BEG a supplier to deliver what they want ?
It is cleat that intel applied pressure on TSC, on behest of their bosom buddy m$.
I have been shunning dell/intel products for 5 years and will continue to do that rest of my life. I urge every one to do the same.
Unfortunately, I cannot shun m$ products because in order to buy h/w without windows, I have to pay a lot more.
Mandriva steals back Nigerian contract from Microsoft
The Vole put out a press release trumpeting its triumph over the open source pushers.
But it seems that decision was made by the supplier, TSC, and not the government agency funding the project.
According to Infoworld, the government agency, Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) has told the supplier to keep Mandriva Linux on the PCs.
Quoting an unnamed official, Infoworld said that the government wanted to stick with Mandriva, although it might switch to Microsoft's software if that proves in the best interests of Nigerian kiddies.

It shouldn't be that hard of a choice to make. Modern Linux distro VS an antiquated version of Windows that's over 6 years old.
