The Free Software Foundation announced Monday it has created an expert witness fund to help assist defendants sued by the Recording Industry Association of America for copyright infringement.

The Boston-based foundation, which promotes the development and use of free software, is seeking donations for the fund, which will "provide computer expert witnesses to combat RIAA's ongoing lawsuits, and to defend against the RIAA's attempt to redefine copyright law."

"It's a way the tech community can help these RIAA victims," Beckerman said. Funding, he added, would go to "the technical people who deserve to get paid for their time."
