Worry-Free DVD Burning
The search for a truly universal DVD burner has finally ended, even as Blu-Ray and HD-DVD looms on the horizon. The brand new Sony DRU-810A can burn any DVD recordable format, and burn with alacrity. But first, let's dive into the jargon, because it's more than a little confusing.
The Sony drive supports both DVD+R and DVD-R discs with two layers. In a seeming attempt to muddy the waters, the DVD+RW Alliance now officially calls it's two-layer disc burning technology "double layer." So you'll see that referred to in the future as DVD+R Double Layer. The competing DVD Forum dubs its two layer technology "dual layer," so you'll see it's products labeled "DVD-R Dual Layer."
Got that? It certainly fills us with foreboding as we look forward with apprehension to the looming Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD wars.
We'll just avoid the issue and call the two formats "DVD+R DL" and "DVD-R DL." The good news in all this is that it doesn't matter what type of two-layer DVD discs you get, the DRU-810A handles them both, although as we'll see shortly, there are performance differences.
