Experiences Since Installing Ubuntu 8.04 Beta
Ubuntu 8.04 “Hardy Heron” Beta has been released, you can get it by downloading a ISO disk image, or by upgrading Ubuntu 7.10 or any of the alpha releases. In this post I’ll just be writing about my experiences with the beta since installing it.
Once the beta was out, I was ready to install it on my computer as my main OS (the alphas were pretty stable, but there have been some major bugs). I wanted wipe out all the bits of software I’ve installed that have been building up since I installed Ubuntu 7.10. So I opted for a clean install. If you don’t have a separate home partition now, think about setting your system up with one. It makes doing a clean install painless.
The live-CD detected my widescreen monitor’s resolution correctly with the 2D “nv” driver. The install went fine, although I noticed that the timezone selector map has been changed so it’s difficult to select or see the cities. The install also went quickly, only taking seven minutes to copy files and configure the new system while I browsed in Firefox.

upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 Beta 1
Well, I stuck my neck out again and upgraded rhea, running Ubuntu 7.10, with Ubuntu 8.04 using the command 'upgrade-manager -d'. And in spite of what the upgrade dialog says, it took twice as long to download and install everything.
So far, I've discovered that sound is broken (nothing will play) and Totem, because of the sound problem, will not play back any video. VLC works fine in its place. Everything else works as near as I can tell, especially Compiz.

Got 8.04 beta 1 working
I too had no sound. I found a post to go to Synaptic Package Manager to Updates and select/enable Unsupported Updates, do an update and restart the machine. I did this and got sound, however it crackled and made programs jerky and unresponsive if I tried listening to music on my system while doing other things. I then disabled the beta Tracking software at startup via Sessions and restarted and all my problems went away. I am pleased how things are running but not too different than 7.10 other than a nice subtle visual "poof" of an icon when selecting an application from the panel. The last issue I see is that when I click the "shutdown" button it is hit or miss whether my desktop actually shuts down... a new problem for me.
My personal computer is primarily a hobby/toy anyway so I don't mind the setbacks but the system still acts like a beta...which it is. I will also agree the download and install process ended up taking quite a few hours, before tackling the problems faced once installed.
