My New Favorite Distro: Gentoo
After my less than satisfactory experience with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron I decided to try Gentoo Linux. I had always wanted to try it since its thought of as a Distro for more advanced Linux users. And it couldn't have been more perfect for me.
The installation was the part that had me worrying, especially after even Ubuntu didn't work on my computer, but the install was really simple. All you need to do is follow the Gentoo Handbook and type what it tells you to, its pretty much word-for-word what you need to do. After spending some time in the LiveCD just setting up partitions and creating filesystems, I compiled my kernel. Call me weak, but I used genkernel to compile a generic kernel that would work on all hardware. Next time I need to install Gentoo, I'll compile my own kernel. After that I installed Grub and created a grub.conf file so I could boot into my new install.
