1. One of the first things you should do this summer is join a nice Free & Open Source Software community. Personally I'm joining a very interesting project called SourceMage Linux, there I hope to help with their packaging and bash scripting. They have a great community! 2. Attached to working on a FOSS project you need to be in a FOSS community, these can be either a Linux User Group or forums or a mailing list etc. Try and help new users out too!
