a penguinista's review of Serenity
Penguinistas tend to love Star Trek and Star Wars. Maybe it's the love of the idea of endless possibilities that runs as a common theme through both free open source software and those movies. That's probably also why Slashdot has run lots and lots of stories in anticipation of last Friday's opening of the movie, Serenity, which is director Joss Whedon's vengeance for the cancellation of the TV sci-fi series, Firefly, on which "Serenity" is based.
And freedom sure don't come cheap to the gritty (but very sexy) crew of the rebel space craft Serenity. Like the penguinistas of yore who would prefer to compile their own operating system from source (shudder) rather than use Microsoft's code, the crew of the Serenity prefers to face rape, murder, and mayhem at the hands of the cannibalistic human zombies called "Reavers," rather than let the imperialistic Alliance suppress their quest to unveil a secret that is sure to loosen the Alliance's galactic grip on power.
In the event that there are two remaining Mad Penguin™ readers who have yet to see "Serenity," this review won't be a spoiler of the film, but if you want to get a complete and detailed summary of the film, you can go here to the Serenity page at TheMovieSpoiler.com. I'm also not here to do a traditional movie review in terms of looking at who did a good job of acting, who sucked, and who's acting career is now assured, yada yada. This is a review that is going to try to figure out why penguinstas and GNUsters are going to see this film in droves, and if the film is really worth the hype.
