Netbooks free with cellular contract?
LG Electronics announced a netbook that sports a built-in HSPA (high speed packet access) modem, and may be available from carriers in subsidized form. The X110 has a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 10-inch screen, 80GB or 120GB hard drive, 802.11b/g, and a wired Ethernet port.
The Korean electronics giant unveiled its new netbook today at the IFA 2008 show in Berlin, but hasn't yet published some key specifications such as size, weight, or anticipated battery life. Another mystery is whether Linux, Windows XP, or both will be offered.
Still, the information LG did provide suggests that the X110, rumored to be a modified version of MSI's Wind, hasn't fallen very far from the netbook tree. Said to be available in white, pink, and silver, the X110 has the following typical netbook specifications, according to LG:

Cellphones obsoletes fast and recycle into metals ? Netbooks ?
Cellphones had been recycled into silver and gold. Currently production is 5 billion per year.
We are planning to move netbook architecture into cellphones, which will eventually stabilize the obsolescence and replacement cycle.
Cellphones are phones first, now phones are just a connection to triple play, TV(news and movies), internet cloud computing and cheap phone(voip operation).
Obviously, iphone with its rage, has not use the mainframe computer design(still PC architecture). New cellphone design in the next few years will have mainframe computer(multi core cpu built in with only USB bus). And cellphone is just a modem(huawei e220, 7.2 mbps USB cellphone subscription connection), wireless with edgeQam channels then GSM, wcdma, or cdma, then Docsis packets.
Its going to be fun. Many cellphone reference designs will be superseded by massive integration on silicon chip. Fabless manufacturers will boom; operating system programmers will fade away like old soldiers who never die.
Footnote:
Wireless 802.11x is ethernet in disguise. Meaning wireless uses ethernet packets, but you need a hotspot to connect. Without a hotspot, your wireless is only good to connect to your own wireless network thru wired networks. Huawei e220 is wireless 3.5G, 3G or 2G protocol(packet converters) thru USB port. You need a cellphone subscription to connect to any telco microwave tower.
