Tiniest Linux distro for what purpose?
Austrumi 0.9.7 has been reviewed here at Tuxmachines.org. Most Linux users are not interested other than a full blown Linux installation on their hdd. Fear of not having all the software at ones' finger tips, rule this world.
However, there is a Linux revolution going on silently. Stamping out the bloated open source wasted codes to allow all distros to use the same Linux kernels. Most bug fixing codes are not universally used, but distro carries them anyway. the revolution is to strip out the excessive codes and run on ramdisk operating system. Repositories can be on USB bus.
So, here we are building up the tiniest Linux distros; not on URL but on email layer of communications. Email will be on the back of Posix packets; the proposed Linux realtime 2.8.x kernels.

Linux redundency and waste thus bloated bugs?
Linux thru 10,000 one man shops and open source offers tremendous varieties but mostly redundent. Gui front ends offers many window managers; but Mozilla and Firefox used their own window manager. So, why waste time; just boot right into any browser and run your software thru the browser window manager. Dummies like me, could never understand the many bugs created by just as many window managers trying to run the same software. Is not the window manager in browser just as adquate?
Talk about lightning fast!
Just for kicks I downloaded and burned a copy of Austrumi 0.9.7. Itš a tiny distro of Linux, less than 50MB. Im running it right now, and I have to say... DAMN! Itš faster than anything Ive ever seen for an operating system.
Itš amazing that you can have a complete operating system, including a browser (Firefox), chat (Xchat), HTML editor (Bluefish), graphics (Gimp), and word processor (Abi) on a business card size CD.
Running it off of Live CD is even more impressive. It loads to RAM and then spits the CD back out!
Only two issues initially: 1) itš a a foreign distribution so initially it boots to Latvian (I think), but itš easy to navigate to the British flag and change to english.
2) Initially it didnt connect to internet, but a simple connection protocol fixed that.
I'm all for bells and whistles but if you just want the bare bones then this is a distro you definately gotta see! Not only that, but imagine what it could do for all those computers that are in garbage dumpsters or sitting in used computer stores gathering dust, just because theyŗe old.
re: lightning fast!
I know! I've reviewed it twice here and said the same thing. There are other distros that load into ram, but Austrumi beats em all in the speed department. Yeah, it's one of Tuxmachines' favorites and it's giving ol' Damn Small a run for it's money. If it ever gets that hard drive installer fixed...

You talk the talk, but do you waddle the waddle?
Then there is a hardware issue ?
If you had tried to install WinXP on some computer housed in an older case with too many holes for ventilation; you would agree with me that bloated codes made your cpu too hot to even finish your WinXP installation. If you tape up some holes and install a case fan, you can direct the heat out of the case. This is the tech support on Motherboards.org: "get a bigger cpu fan!" But tiniest Linux can come to rescue. Idling cpu seldom gets hot. Another distro in the tiny Linux ranks just came back after many years of silence with a new release, today. Finnix is a Debian based livecd operating system at less than 100 mb of compressed codes. Take a look and see if you like these tiny Linux distros?
