Handbrake 0.93 released, capitulates on DVD decryption
Handbrake, the closest thing to entertainment manna we have, has released the newest version of its open-source DVD ripping software, version 0.93. There's just one problem: it no longer rips DVDs. At least, not the kind you'd want to rip.
While it has some shiny, new functionality, like the ability to ingest video in any format (not merely DVDs) and superior video quality, it rid itself of the number-one reason for getting it in the first place:
DVD decryption.

Best thing since sliced bread?
So if HandBrake is "the closest thing to entertainment manna we have" why do Ubuntu's repositories--where you can find a package for every useless thing under the sun--remain mute upon a search for it?

sheez. Ubuntu isn't the be
sheez.
Ubuntu isn't the be all and end all.
Any ripper of a decent type has heard of handbrake and a helluva lotta repos have it.
Some distributions have it
I checked it and it looks good. The CLI version is in the main repository of Arch, and some of the GUI options are available in the community repository. Now I just need to give it a spin.
Thoggen
There is an app in the Ubuntu repos called "Thoggen" which is a GTK based DVD ripper. It perfect for me.
Handbrake
Thanks for pointing out this program. I grabbed the deb from the Handbrake site and it installed under Intrepid without issue.
I just used it to make a widescreen version of one of my old camcorder home movies using the crop function. Simple and very useful.
cheers
