Windows 7 - could have been called Vista SE
Occasionally I go nuts and decide to see if the people at Microsoft have aped anything good from OS X or Linux, or gotten it right if they did. With all the hubbub about Windows 7, I decided to give it a try, and I was less than amused.
The good stuff: (The short part)
* Windows 7 is not a total fuck up compared to Vista, it did do one thing that Vista could not, and two things XP couldn’t.
* It detected my wifi card. (Vista couldn’t)
* It detected my wifi card & my ethernet port (XP couldn’t.
* Vista really had no excuse to not detect my wifi card as it’s merely a Broadcom B43 and any Linux can use it with a bit of generic firmware and the in-kernel driver.
* Windows 7’s GUI shell and the audio stack are less laggy and glitchy now because Microsoft is running them with higher priority. The flip side is that Windows is not a real time or low latency kernel like Linux can be, so this will simply starve all your other running programs of CPU attention unless you just have a really expensive processor with lots of cores.
