Upgraded Site software

Site News

I upgraded the Drupal software to the latest and greatest last night. All went well except one (or two) little niggle(s). The Subscriptions table upgrade failed with what it thought were irrecoverable errors, but they didn't seem that major to me. The Subscriptions module still seems to be working, but I'm not 100% sure.

The only way around the errors:

1. I'm gonna take a look and see if I can fix them manually, but we might lose data and folks might lose their subscriptions.

2. Delete the Subscriptions table and let it make a new one, but folks will lose their subscriptions.

I hate to have to have folks resubscribe. I imagine there are folks who probably never visit until they get a notification of a topic of interest and if they never get another notice, they may never return. Of the folks this doesn't apply, it's still a hassle. This happened one upgrade before. Sad

But we are now using 6.14. I usually have to lag far behind the rest of the crowd in updating because I wait until most of modules have been ported. And this usually occurs a few months before the next major version release. Tongue

I had issues with the old theme. I started from the default Bluemarine theme like before, but I just couldn't nudge some of the elements exactly where I wanted them and some little behaviors wouldn't be customized. I've enabled the old theme as it is as a choice that can be chosen from your account settings. The little niggles that I didn't like were very minor, but enough I didn't want to use it as default anymore.

We needed a new look big time anyway. So, this mostly white theme worked out really well. I was able to fix about everything that I wanted and get just about like I want it. I'm fairly sure I'll be sticking with it for a while.

But there are a couple of choices in your account settings. I may add a few more as time allows. If you used one before that is now missing, let me know and I'll see if there's a 6.x port for it.

Let me know if there are any other issues I haven't noticed. And let me know if your subscriptions are or are not working anymore. If they're broke anyway, might as well delete the table and start over.

Thanks!!!

Edit: appears smileys are having issues. I'll get to that today sometime.

UPDATE: Smileys fixed!

re: curiosity?

Well, Drupal only supports the current version and the one previous. With version 7 seeing betas now, it's not too long before 7 will be released and 5.x won't get security updates - and with 5.x on its .20 and 6.x on .14, you can see that drupal gets a lot of security updates. You just can't run a very old version of drupal. So, it wasn't curiosity. I tested 6 on a test machine and wrote a review for linux.com over a year ago. So, I'd seen it and its new features - and the loss of others.

I tested it in Firefox 3.5, and Opera 10, and Konqueror. I didn't test any IE. I guess I will now. Big Grin

I couldn't get the primary links in the header to move any further left without messing up the title and motto in the old tuxmachines theme. I might could live with that, even tho it kinda messed up at smaller widths too, but the article tags in the breadcrumb moved down to a whole line for themselves in the frontpage teasers too. I could get it move right, but not up to the primary breadcrumb line where it used to sit. I'm not good enough with php to hack on the drupal php files much. If I can't do it in css, then I'm pretty much screwed.

So, Whitejazz really only shows one column in Windows? The themer said it tested and worked in IE. Sad

re: IE

It works here on XP in IE 6.x. The ad in the header is hiked up and the logo background isn't transparent, but it works. It actually looks pretty good other than those two things. The fonts look killer in IE! Big Grin

I think there's a "fix IE png" toggle in the theme config....

Upgrading is worth the pain...

...and I do like the new theme. I have upgraded most of my sites to Drupal 6, and recently I have been basing my installations on the Acquia distribution rather than the standard Drupal one. (You can do this for free.) The advantage is that it includes a lot of extra modules which Acquia support (views, CCK etc) and they are guaranteed to all work well together.

Hmm...

At first, the new theme wasn't to my liking but, as I use it more, it's starting to grow on me.

I love it!

So much better. Faster and clearer.

It looks pretty good

nice, clean, simple look.

I love simple.

Fixed

Wow that was quick. Now it is working.

Theme

I give the new theme two thumbs up.

No login on main page.

There is no login link on the main page under Navigation.

re: no login

never has been, not since like year 1. It's a waste of space when there's about 15 login links all down the page under the teasers as well as inside under each story. I got rid of that box a loonnng time ago.

I swear it was there just

I could have sworn it was there just last week with the old theme. No probelmo dudette.

re: tm/drupal widths

Well, I use fluid themes which means the resolution should be variable. This theme looks good until you get down to tiny smartphone size. It looks good all the way down to netbook size, like 640 or so.

I don't know what to think or do about your IE problem. It tests good here. It is a consideration because I see a lot of Windows machines in the logs. I guess I'm hoping your in the very small minority. No one else has said anything, but only like a 1/2 a percent of visitors ever log in and and only a teny tiny percentage of them ever comment. I don't know... <heavy sigh>

re: subscriptions

the subscription I referred to were just subscribing to topics - getting emails if something is posted in their subscribed topic. Yeah, the name is a bit off. "Subscriptions" make you think of subscribing to a service for a fee, but in this case, I guess it's still a service, but nothing worthy of a fee.

  • How To Install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9 - idroot

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9. For those of you who didn’t know, MongoDB is a high-performance, highly scalable document-oriented NoSQL database. Unlike in SQL databases where data is stored in rows and columns inside tables, in MongoDB, data is structured in JSON-like format inside records which are referred to as documents. The open-source attribute of MongoDB as a database software makes it an ideal candidate for almost any database-related project. This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the MongoDB NoSQL database on AlmaLinux 9. You can follow the same instructions for CentOS and Rocky Linux.

  • Self-host a Ghost Blog With Traefik

Ghost is a very popular open-source content management system. Started as an alternative to WordPress and it went on to become an alternative to Substack by focusing on membership and newsletter. The creators of Ghost offer managed Pro hosting but it may not fit everyone's budget. Alternatively, you can self-host it on your own cloud servers. On Linux handbook, we already have a guide on deploying Ghost with Docker in a reverse proxy setup. Instead of Ngnix reverse proxy, you can also use another software called Traefik with Docker. It is a popular open-source cloud-native application proxy, API Gateway, Edge-router, and more. I use Traefik to secure my websites using an SSL certificate obtained from Let's Encrypt. Once deployed, Traefik can automatically manage your certificates and their renewals. In this tutorial, I'll share the necessary steps for deploying a Ghost blog with Docker and Traefik.
