Rumors abound: Mandriva to be Sold

MDV

Translate this site from french into english says 2 companies are looking to buy Mandriva assets.

http://www.mandrivalinux-online.org/news/news.php

Bad translation basically says that financial troubles are causing Mandriva to shut down, and selling it is an alternative.

Atang, just when I have my "Atang Comment Detection Filter" pretty much perfected, you change your format!

Mandriva needs capital

I think what it all boils down to is that Mandriva needs capital. $3 mil isn't much to work with when you're a company like they are. Development costs, marketing, internet presence...it adds up to a huge wad of cash for them. Without capital, it's hard to move forward, and they don't have someone like Mark willing to foot the bill.

Community take over?

Mandriva made a mistake long ago by relying on the desktop user to sell it's goods to. It never got the inroads into the lucrative enterprise/server sector that Red Hat and Suse did. Cannonical has seen the light, and is moving into that sector, as well. Mandriva has gone through so many trials and tribulations over the course of it's history.

Distros like PCLinuxOS and Mepis succeed out of just a community of volunteer developers. Is it possible that Mandriva could survive as such? Does it necessarily have to be a corporate venture? Could what's left of Mandriva partner up with either or both PCLinuxOS and the Unity Linux project to continue development and move forward?

Honestly, Mandriva is the most important distro in the world, for me. Mandrake Linux 7 is what allowed me to become a Linux user at all. It's what I cut my teeth on. I still think it and it's spinoffs are the best distros out there. I'd hate to see it whither.

Honestly, I think poor management has made this happen. They've never been good at being a for-profit company.

Mandriva + PCLinuxOS + Unity Linux partner up

I really support, what you said ruel24, i really hope they will merge/partner/share Smile

  • How To Install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9 - idroot

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9. For those of you who didn’t know, MongoDB is a high-performance, highly scalable document-oriented NoSQL database. Unlike in SQL databases where data is stored in rows and columns inside tables, in MongoDB, data is structured in JSON-like format inside records which are referred to as documents. The open-source attribute of MongoDB as a database software makes it an ideal candidate for almost any database-related project. This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the MongoDB NoSQL database on AlmaLinux 9. You can follow the same instructions for CentOS and Rocky Linux.

  • Self-host a Ghost Blog With Traefik

Ghost is a very popular open-source content management system. Started as an alternative to WordPress and it went on to become an alternative to Substack by focusing on membership and newsletter. The creators of Ghost offer managed Pro hosting but it may not fit everyone's budget. Alternatively, you can self-host it on your own cloud servers. On Linux handbook, we already have a guide on deploying Ghost with Docker in a reverse proxy setup. Instead of Ngnix reverse proxy, you can also use another software called Traefik with Docker. It is a popular open-source cloud-native application proxy, API Gateway, Edge-router, and more. I use Traefik to secure my websites using an SSL certificate obtained from Let's Encrypt. Once deployed, Traefik can automatically manage your certificates and their renewals. In this tutorial, I'll share the necessary steps for deploying a Ghost blog with Docker and Traefik.
