Cherokee vs. Apache: the Older Indian Serves Better?
Cherokee « is a tiny, very fast, lightweight Web server. It is implemented entirely in C, and has no dependencies beyond a standard C library. It is embeddable and extensible with plug-ins. It supports on-the-fly configuration by reading files or strings, TLS/SSL (via GNUTLS or OpenSSL), virtual hosts, authentication, cache friendly features, PHP4, custom error management, and much more. »
That was from its own page. Álvaro López Ortega, a Spanish 26-y.o. guy living in Dublin, where it currently works with Sun Microsystems, dared to challenge the de facto leader of web servers -- that is, Apache.
Cherokee is a free, alternative web server, started in 2001. Its only limitation is that it doesn't yet run on Windows, but only on Linux, BSD, Solaris and MacOS.
I wanted to test Álvaro's statement on Cherokee: « Es el más rápido de todos los servidores web » (in El País, Jan. 5, 2006).
