SUSE 10.1 beta 3 Report
A new beta of SUSE was released yesterday and since I missed beta2, I just had to look at beta 3. In a few words, no big changes are afoot, but plenty under-the-hood updates and few surprizes were found. Some of these new and improved items may have shown up in beta 2, so this is our report on SUSE development since beta 1.
Yippee. The most obvious change was in the area of eye candy. Yes, we have a new wallpaper!!! <jumps up and down clapping> There is a new install boot splash, with matching system login theme as well as a matching KDE splash. This is a lovely graphic in wonderfully tasteful shades of blue with an abstract whisps of flowing waves. These carry the name of the distro and version number in small discrete lettering with a very small suse logo. Again, my lack of vocabulary inhibits adequate description, but hopefully pictures are worth a thousand words. The desktop background is also in shades of blue with an image of the suse logo highlighting. I think blue is a wonderful choice as that's the color of the pretty default suse windec. However, the gnome theme is running green, so, not as good a match there. Although the gnome themes is pretty enough in its own right. All told, we were pleased with the new appearance.
The next obvious improvement was an update to KDE 3.5.1. There were no big new additions but suse retained their great menu search that I love so much. Kernel is updated to 2.6.16 rc1, and judging by the changelog, it looks as tho it's been in place since beta 2. Xorg has been 6.9.0 for quite some time, but gcc was updated to a more recent 4.1.0 version.
As stated gnome sports a bit of a new look as well as slight changes in other window managers. Openbox has an overall real pretty look.
I didn't see any new yast modules, but I may have spotted some new applications. Perhaps blinKen, xephem, gpsdrive, and Virtual Keyboard are new, or perhaps I never noticed them before. In any case, they looked fairly neato. I lost an hour to that dawg-goned blinKen! However, most everything else in menu I've seen before.
OpenOffice has a slightly newer build version and Firefox has been updated to the very recently released 1.5.0.1. Gimp has been updated slightly in version number, but most noticeable for it is a new splash screen. Although uncaptured in a screenshot, it can be described as a variation on the new splash screens found throughout, except it presents in an orangy-yellow hue.
Their new NetworkManager worked fine during install this time and no post-install fix was needed. However, my usb scanner was broken. I'm finding this a possible trend in any kernel newer than the 2.6.14 branch. No devices are made for it in /dev. There are also some fontconfig fix rpms uploaded onto the mirrors already as well. It was stated in the changelog that beagle was fixed, but it never did open from the menu here. The Suse Help Center is showing problems too as it takes several minutes to finally open. If you'll notice the help center in the openbox screenshot above, that application was clicked on in the gnome menu. I had given up, logged out, and logged into openbox before it opened. I know, I was as shocked as you. I didn't think something like that could happen, but it did. Believe it ...or not!
