Long, winding road led from caddyshack to boardroom
Matthew Szulik was all of 8 years old when his father drove him to the New Bedford Country Club and told him to walk to the clubhouse and "go to the man at the end and tell him you want to caddie."
He did as he was told.
After waiting around all day, he went home in tears. The boy, who would one day become the ever-optimistic champion of open source software and the CEO of Red Hat, an S&P 500 corporation with 3.000 employees and 61 branches around the world, didn't get any work that day.
But he didn't stop trying. Not only did the experience instill a work ethic and competitive drive at a young age, it indirectly set the stage for his college education and his ticket out of a town where he saw his peers grow up to be on fishing boats, in jail, or dead.
