Open Source Landmark
Red Hat will likely make history this year, becoming the first open source vendor to crack the $1 billion annual revenue mark. Yesterday, we sat down with VP and General Manager Paul Smith, who has grown the company’s federal business from three employees to more than 120 in six years. He tells us this is the golden age for open source in the federal government.
Paul says that Federal CIO Vivek Kundra has embraced open source, leading agencies like the Pied Piper. For instance, six years ago Treasury had a memo saying no open source without a signed waiver. Now, it is one of the leaders in moving legacy applications to open source cloud architectures. That has helped the federal sector become Red Hat's largest growth area the past six years. In more recent news, Paul says the company released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and is one of the innovators of Deltacloud. Deltacloud.org (Apache Software Foundation), which builds a multi-cloud API set, enables customers to write to a single API and deploy applications on many different cloud providers' platforms (like Amazon or Rackspace) without fear of vendor lock-in.
