There is no Linux desktop

There are KDE, GNOME and many other species of desktop environments. In each species there are many subspecies, for example, PCLinuxOS KDE, Fedora KDE and so on.

The differences don't stop there. Developers do not necessarily comply with the file system hierarchy, they use different files for configuration.

Any distro which aims to be the one most used can only ever be at most a large fish in a small pond.
