What major application software you must have ?
Microsoft has Works.
Works included word processor, database, spreadsheet and a communication terminal. Linux has to replace it with a browser to communicate on the internet.
The combination can do anything server or desktop all within the browser environment. Meaning they are plug-ins to the browser, and they can import and export data among the software themselves.
I can do engineering model with such software defining purpose and goal in wordprocessor, if a model can be borrowed from some products in existance and its data sheet(database); just by refining some incremental numbers from a spreadsheet calculation. Research work can be done just with such a combination of software.
The difference of server and desktop application is whether you use the server as an online service with a large repository or use your own computer offline. It is a question of how big a computer we need. Novell network system is an example of how to use one software for both server and desktop.

Why openoffice could create enterprise class websites ?
Openoffice has to be a plug-in to browser first, to be able to test websites easily offline.
Then you use wordprocessor with formletter library and drag and drop ajax codes to build your website. And use formletter webpages just by making appropiete changes.
Use database to store your webpages, with the home webpage linking to all the other webpages. Ajax codes only have to offer the home webpage.
Any calculations on the webpage can be done on a spreadsheet that result stored in database.
There are three type of websites, you could create.
1) Ctty in console(hard wired, even modems are connected by mechanically switched telephone lines for maximum security) to bbs or Novell network system, peer to peer or client to server. Running program locks out break code(02).
2) Email account to automatic reply with a webpage which sends email back and forth by ajax codes. Junkmail prevention is the firewall.
3) URL domail registration is on the internet, automatic home webpage presentation upon logon to firewall.
All these communications can be handled by ajax codes already written and can be reused forever.
You can see that openoffice has to add many libraries to do webpages and thus create websites. To do enterprise class websites, the database has to be storing infinite number of webpages, and/or the repository of the database can be distributed by location(IP address), either grid or blades.
Do we need apache, or PHP or drupal? Not necessarily, unless they use enterprise class database or distributed repositories.

Ctty console connects via serial port, modem and ethernet to server or peer to peer arangement in netword environment. Essentially, your keyboard or mouse and monitor screen takes over another hdd in another computer. Whereas email and URL accounts, you only send packets to and fro.

In wordprocessor, you have library of formletters, which is user friendly to the extreme; because you could also have sample websites(stores, services, or manufacturer's website to buy and sell goods). All other server software, you may have to spend months to learn how to write a website, and never learned the skills to do a world class website unless you hire a teacher.
