Movie Review: The Interpreter
Starring the impeccably talented Nicole Kidman and seasoned veteran Sean Penn, The Interpreter was a riveting political thriller chocked full of suspense and intrigue with a layer of melancholy on top. Just when you think you have the plot figured out, it twists and then twists again until the unexpected climax.
Nicole Kidman, one of the premier talents of our day, plays the title role with excellence. The movie begins with her character seeming to be the good citizen whose only motive is to save a visiting dignitary. As the story unfolds, you find she may have motives of her own. Digging thru the layers our hero finds a complicated personality with a few skeletons.
Sean Penn, who as an actor has really matured and begun to earn a new respect past few years after a turbulent decade of bad press and even worse movies, played his part with equal perfection. His character is the dedicated workaholic Secret Service agent bent on protecting the president of Matobo and saving the girl. Does he find out too late that perhaps he needs to protect the president from the girl?
No groundbreaking camera tricks or new special effects were noticed, but a interesting script with engaging dialogue, classic Hollywood direction from Sydney Pollack and expert editing made for an exciting picture. The talented cast was also an asset. Besides the stars we were treated with a co-starring performances from the beautiful Catherine Keener and talented Jesper Christensen. The Interpreter was an all around excellent flick.
