With Xonotic 0.8.0 finally having been released after one and a half years in development, here's some open-source Mesa/Gallium3D graphics benchmarks on many different graphics cards for this high-profile open-source first person shooter game.

Interstellar Marines On Linux With Catalyst: Bull S*#@
He forewarns that there's explicit language in his video due to being upset over the poor graphics performance of Catalyst 14.12 when using a Radeon R9 270 graphics card for this Unity 4 game. The rest of his system comes down to an AMD FX-8350 Vishera, 8GB of RAM, Ubuntu-derived Linux Mint 17.1, and is playing at 1920 x 1080. His Radeon R9 270 graphics card is from XFX. The specs should be good enough for this independent Unity-powered game, but at least with Catalyst 14.12, there's still issues to overcome.

Today we are very excited to give you the next iteration of Xonotic, the free and fast arena shooter. Yep, you guessed it: Xonotic 0.8.0 is out! This version is the culmination of months of effort from many individuals from across the globe. It contains improvements in just about all visible aspects of the game and onto the web. There are new menu screens, gameplay features, and a much-anticipated new weapon: the Arc! We’re excited for the what the future holds, and we hope to see you out on the servers soon. Happy fragging!

Storm United, Online FPS Shows First Real Game-play Video, First Alpha Due Soon
Storm United is a beautiful FPS game running on the Unreal Engine that will have full Linux support, and they have shown off their first real game-play video. The game was originally built in Unity, but it was dropped in favour of Unreal Engine which performs far better for this type of game.

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future TechThe metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |
