Ubuntu 6.06 Painless to Install, Full of Features

Ubuntu has released the latest, complete version of its all-conquering Linux operating system, version 6.06.

Codenamed Dapper Drake -- don't ask -- and featuring the latest Gnome desktop environment, 6.06 comes in installable live desktop CDs and text-mode install CDs.

The LiveCD version features a fast and painless installer -- you just pop in the disk, reboot your machine, and it will load a fully functional Ubuntu Linux desktop. Nothing has been installed up to this stage -- it all runs from the CD.

Boot times can become slow on systems with many CPUs, partly because of the time it takes to crank up all the RAM chips. Mel Gorman recently submitted some patches to start up RAM chips in parallel instead of one after the other. One of the main problems with trying to implement such a feature—and one of the main reasons such patches haven't made it into the kernel before—is the need to avoid slowing things down for smaller systems.
