Gentoo Store: Closing its doors
Hi everyone,
May 22, only 10 days away, will be the last day that the Gentoo Store will be open for business and accepting new orders.
We hope to sell all of our existing merchandise by this date, and I hope that you will help us by snagging anything you want while it's still available. We have limited quantities of CDs, t-shirts, hats hoodies and pull-overs still in stock. Please purchase now before something you want sells out!
Regarding the future...
I am happy to see the Gentoo Foundation grow to maturity. Over the past few months, the Foundation is moving forward by accepting donations directly and holding its first-ever trustee elections. In addition, the Gentoo Foundation has been able to acquire free legal assistance. Because of this, the closing of the Store shouldn't have any negative effect whatsoever on the future of the project. If anything, it is a sign that Gentoo is continuing to mature and grow.
The trustees are currently considering opening a Cafepress store for the project. Cafepress shirts and hats won't be quite as nice as the ones we have for sale now (hint, hint) but will still allow people to get Gentoo merchandise to proudly display their Gentoo affiliation.
Regarding the store...
Over the last 18 months or so, more and more people have been using broadband Internet connections to download Gentoo. Gentoo's user community has continued to experience rapid
growth, but our Store CD sales in particular have continued to fall. Unfortunately, the CD sales are what have allowed the store to be profitable (we don't make much money on the clothing) so the broadband trend has prevented the Store from making any profit for quite a few months. We haven't had enough revenue to cover our overhead for a while.
So, it's time to shut down the store, since it really isn't helping to pay Foundation-related bills like it was a couple of years ago.
For the last six months, we've been trying to keep the store going using some significant volunteer assistance from the Robbins family (Thank you Mom!)
What this means is that it's time to close the Store, and for me to move on from Gentoo to a new adventure. Thank you to everyone who has helped to make Gentoo the success that it is today!
Rest assured that the Gentoo Foundation is ready to take Gentoo to the next level.
Oh, and buy some stuff from the store before it closes!
Best Regards,
Daniel Robbins
