their research on a simplified economic model attempting to recreate the
dynamics of Windows' competition with Linux, where Windows has market share
and profitability on its side, while Linux benefits from a faster
development cycle and lower cost. Casadesus-Masanell and Ghemawat found,
to their surprise, that Linux's advantages by themselves didn't mean Linux
would ultimately oust Windows, because of Windows' initially dominant

The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

The thinking of technology advancement of Linux community to gain market share is found to be lacking; because of marketing by distribution channels. If you do not have distribution, all the goodies can not be sold. In distribution, promotion leads to payola scandals. This understanding is beyond advertizing that Google thinks they are good at. Microsoft uses their marketing muscles to out sell Linux, everyday.

So, Novell and Mandriva had to sell with HP and Dell, on new installations. IBM or Lenova too, as well as Acer are also important distribution channels. Its time that Linux think distribution and give up free throw aways of their goods?

You never kill your merchandise prospects before maturity; with the announcement of a new version coming. Novell especially should be careful, to control promotions. All upgrades should be limited to support of existing versions. Lock down your new products for five years but with constant upgrade support? Is that Microsoft's secret success story with auto-update? I love WinMe, no work for me; just use it and like it.

As in real estate, which is location, location, location. In computer operating system, it is support, support, support for five years, upgrading without questions.
