Red Hat's Linux Not Just for Networks
Although Red Hat's business is primarily focused on corporate computer networks, the Raleigh software company has a history with Linux in devices, as well.
As the rest of its business took off, embedded software became a smaller part of Red Hat's financial statements. In 2005, it accounted for 2.4 percent of revenue.
But Red Hat is still committed to embedded Linux, spokeswoman Leigh Day said. The company increasingly has sold its embedded Linux products to resellers, which turn around and sell them to device manufacturers in the government, health care, telecommunications and financial services markets, she said.
"We're seeing the mainstream use of Linux has spread," she said. "It's difficult to calculate all the places it shows up and all the places it affects our revenue."
Red Hat's version of Linux is one of the most popular open-source options for device companies, said Chris Lanfear with Venture Development Corp., a technology market research firm.
Red Hat Linux is being used in wireless routers and medical devices, Day said. It also is showing up in unconventional applications.
