N800 first impressions
If you're not familiar with it, this is Nokia's second handheld computer running their Linux-based Internet Tablet OS (the first being the Nokia 770, released in 2005). Here are some first impressions of this new device from a 770 user.
Summary:
I am sorry to say, either there needs to be a recall or we're unlucky and happened to get two units with defective cameras
Even without this hardware flaw, the camera is currently useless from a software standpoint also. (hopefully this will improve after the firmware update, which is now available... but only for windows users so far)
The good
- Hardware
- The ARMv6 cpu has more than double the "BogoMIPS" than the 770's ARMv5, and you can immediately feel the difference.
- The RAM and internal flash have both been doubled (128MB RAM, 256MB storage with ~170MB available to the user)
- Two SD slots: one behind the battery door, and one behind the stand. One 128MB mini-SD is included, along with the (required) adapter to put it in an SD slot. I have two RS-MMC cards in my N800 right now.

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future TechThe metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |
