Putting an old laptop to good use with Xubuntu
As a sysadmin at a boutique web hosting shop, I have access to a lot of obsolete hardware that has accumulated over the years. One day while perusing the back room where the old hardware is kept, I spotted an old laptop in its docking station buried under some other hardware. I pulled it from the shelf, dislodging at least 4 years of dust. Upon examination I found myself holding a Compaq Armada 7400. In my previous life as a tech at a Compaq reseller, I knew these to be excellent machines. At my desk I booted it up and in no time was using Windows 95 but it was quite slow in normal tasks. This would have been acceptable for the use it was going to get (displaying a system monitoring page on its screen) but I wondered if I could improve the situation a bit.
With this limited hardware I had to choose my OS carefully. Of course, to me a computer without Windows is like a dog without a 55 gallon drum of bacon grease tied around its neck. The obvious choice for a new OS was Linux.
