What is this ar program thingy?
Travelling through the mysterious and wonderful world of the linux file system we come across a program called "ar" and we think to ourselves, "What is this 'ar' program thingy?". It sounds like a pirates exclamation but it is actually a very important program.
The program "ar" stands for ARchive and that is exactly what it does. It archives files as separate units in one larger file. The windows fans will immediately think of zip files and in one sense they are right except that "ar" does not compress the files. Many linux fans will immediately think of tar files or "tarballs" and they will be even more correct. Tar stands for Tape ARchive and is a successor to "ar". The "ar" program comes from the binutils package.
