Red Hat vs. Microsoft: Who will win?
Jeff Gould of InformationWeek has an interesting article entitled, "Can Red Hat Rival Microsoft?" He sets it up provocatively, if not accurately. It's a problem, Jeff, if you believe the alternative is truly proprietary vs. open source. But I think the market is moving past that decision.
It's voting open source. The real question, five years from now, is whether someone wants to adopt Microsoft's business model or Red Hat's - Microsoft's won't exist for any but Microsoft. The proprietary model is a relic of a giddy, short-lived past. There is no reason that software should be dramatically different from every other industry on the planet, nearly all of which treat raw materials as commodities and focus on the service stitching those materials together. That's where we're going with software.
