Linux and live CD's. What's the attraction?
Every Linux distribution available seems to be coming out as a live CD. A reader (you know who you are has asked me how these live CD's work and what is the use of them. Here is my attempt at providing an answer.
A live CD is a bootable CDROM which boots into an operating system which runs entirely from the CD. Generally there is no interaction with the host computers hard disk. The hard disk can be accessed if needed but for the operating system to run it is not necessary. The only thing needed is enough RAM for the operating system to work and a bootable CDROM drive.
Live CD's can be made in a couple of different ways. An older method is where the CD is divided into two parts. One part emulating a bootable floppy disk and the other part holding the actual system. The bootable floppy disk part contains the kernel and enough drivers to enable the computer to recognise the other part of the CD which is then activated.

Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |
